This resulted in about 2.9 million hospitalizations and 176,000 deaths. In 2015, fire and heat resulted in 67 million injuries. Tetanus toxoid should be given if not up to date. The most common complications of burns involve infection. Extensive burns often require large amounts of intravenous fluid, due to capillary fluid leakage and tissue swelling. Full-thickness burns usually require surgical treatments, such as skin grafting. It is not clear how to manage blisters, but it is probably reasonable to leave them intact if small and drain them if large. Partial-thickness burns may require cleaning with soap and water, followed by dressings. Cooling with tap water may help pain and decrease damage however, prolonged cooling may result in low body temperature. Superficial burns may be managed with little more than simple pain medication, while major burns may require prolonged treatment in specialized burn centers. Treatment depends on the severity of the burn. The burn is often black and frequently leads to loss of the burned part. A fourth-degree burn additionally involves injury to deeper tissues, such as muscle, tendons, or bone. Healing typically does not occur on its own. Often there is no pain and the burnt area is stiff. In a full-thickness or third-degree burn, the injury extends to all layers of the skin. Healing can require up to eight weeks and scarring may occur. Blisters are frequently present and they are often very painful. When the injury extends into some of the underlying skin layer, it is a partial-thickness or second-degree burn. They appear red without blisters and pain typically lasts around three days. īurns that affect only the superficial skin layers are known as superficial or first-degree burns. Burns can also occur as a result of self-harm or violence between people (assault). Alcoholism and smoking are other risk factors. In the workplace, risks are associated with fire and chemical and electric burns. In the home, risks are associated with domestic kitchens, including stoves, flames, and hot liquids. Burns occur mainly in the home or the workplace. Most burns are due to heat from hot liquids (called scalding), solids, or fire. The Chinese government is trying to “provide maximum protection to people’s lives and health while minimizing the COVID impact on social and economic development,” said Zhao Lijian, the Foreign Ministry spokesman regarding the Covid-Zero Policy in China. Therefore, the engagement with the making process and with sustaining the intense memory of my visual experience has become my motivation.Ī studio with immersive wall space and luxurious skylights. My use of recurring motifs or subjects is from different circumstances of the reality that is recalled by endless looking, wondering and dreaming - fleeting experiences, both mundane and extraordinary. It’s born from uncertainty and temporality, and thus, an instinct that drives you to put down paints. In 2020, **** moved back to China due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. Through their brushstrokes, they stitch together patches of color to capture specific emotions, creating works that beckon viewers to step closer and lose themselves in the layers of paint. **** has devoted themself fully to painting and developed a style defined by vivid colors and abstract forms. home for many years when they moved to ******* for their MFA. **** **** is an artist who grew up in ****, China, and called the U.S. They looked down at the little grasping velcro plant in surprise and we both started laughing until we were doubled over on the slippery rocks now wet with rain. I slapped it across my chest like a pageant queens sash and tossed a stem over to them where it stuck neatly to the front of their sweater. Another memory: on the walk back I was showing **** my favorite plants: rhododendrons, hemlocks, ferns, nettles…then I stooped to pull up a garland of cleavers that was climbing around the rocks. I remember shucking off my boot and lending them one of my wool socks so they could finish the hike and paint in comfort. **** slipped and submerged their foot into the icy stream. A few other memories float to the surface regarding that day On our hike into the ravine we picked our way across the stream leaping from rock to rock and tottering across fallen logs. A few hours later we were soaked to the skin but happy as two clams in a creek. As the Pennsylvanian’s say: it was ‘spritzing.’ **** painted en plein air and I sat at the waters edge writing fragments of poems. We set up camp among the rhododendrons on a small pebble beach. It was a cool, glistening, green-grey of a day. **** carried in their canvas, easel and paint and I brought my notebook and pen. Not long after we met, we went for a hike into Tucquan Glen, one of the most pristine and scenic of seven ravines which opens onto the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, PA. I knew we would be friends at once as we were both born with souls of the poets. **** and I met about 8 years ago when they were doing a residency at the (redacted). I send strength, love and above all solidarity to all who are out on the streets in China and around the world as the people rise up and the powers come down. In doing so they have been unjustly beaten by the police, detained and many have gone missing after being arrested. Over the last few months and this past weekend, especially after many Covid-Zero related tragedies have occurred across China, the people have taken to the streets to voice their dissent of the governments policies which have included three relentless years of mass testing, quarantines and city-wide snap lockdowns. There is a real risk they could be targeted since the Chinese government is matching names and photographs of protestors and those who speak out against the Covid-Zero policy on foreign websites. **** has requested I not use their name for this newsletter since they speak up and share below about their recent experiences protesting the Covid-Zero policy and subsequent crackdowns on ‘white paper protestors’ happening now in China. I am thrilled to have my friend, **** **** share with the Wax Poetic this month. On this week’s Wax Poetic Love Letter I give you the monthly feature Writers Prompt that drops on the first week of each month! Writers Prompt is where I invite an artist of any stripe/person of interest to, in blind and good faith, respond to five prompts of my selection. I was warned it would be like this, so I am not surprised. It is beautiful to be displayed even as a mere piece for exposition, or for collectors and admirers of rare and traditional wind instruments.Īs a beginner on a first contact, I find it a bit difficult to play, as any other begginer seems to, either. The instrument itself appears to be very well made, a true artisaincraft. It’s the first full video guide for tuning a Turkish Kanun. We have made a special tutorial for you guys. Our kanun's collection How to tune the Kanun? So, great skill is needed to seamlessly incorporate it into the orchestra. Why is this? Well, it stems from the fact that it is the loudest string instrument (in the Turkish family). Having said this, if a player is relatively new to the qanun, it will drown out the ensemble and completely take over. It truly makes the rest of the instruments seem like they are just an extra! If you are ever lucky enough to experience an ensemble with the qanun, you may well notice that it stands out from the rest. It emits a rather bright, uplifting tone that encompasses a variety of pitches that lends itself well to orchestral accompaniments. Not only that but, as the instrument was altered, the physical playing style was too! The innovative changes that are present in the newer version of the qanun, allowed it to have an increasingly interesting sound character. The Piano of The East: The Qanun - The Sound Overall, the most distinct feature of the qanun has to be the bridge! It’s raised from the body by pillars and rests on a bed of animal skin! You won’t find anything else quite like this, trust us. If you look closely, you will spy the white accents - can you guess the material used for this? That’s right! It’s ivory (traditionally). Like a guitar, the strings are stretched taught and can be adjusted by wooden and separate metal pegs (only present in the more recent versions, that allowed for a more fine-tuned sound) so players can ensure the sound is pitch-perfect.Ĭreators of this magical instrument make sure the holes themselves are adorned with intricate carvings. This instrument is constructed from walnut wood that is specifically cut into a trapezoid form.Īmazingly, there are a whopping 78 strings on the carefully crafted form! They are split into groups of three so, this means it houses a sum of 26 sets (if you are a maths whizz, you would have figured that out quicker than us!). The Piano of The East: The Qanun - Characteristics This seems like an odd tidbit to know, right? Well, experts stumbled across records at the Arab Music Congress in 1932 that stated this fact. However, both the old and the new kind existed together until 1930. Ever heard of him? If not, he is an Istanbul qanun maker that believed something about the first version wasn’t good enough! Master Mustafa saglam tuning the levelers of the kanun The other tale that is told starts in 1876, where experts began to distinguish between the original qanun and the more recent variety.Īccording to researchers, this one was first produced by Mahmut Usta. To find out for sure, historians need far more evidence. It is said that this one was brought over to Cairo, Egypt by a Syrian refugee at the time of the Ottoman Empire. If you have studied historical music, you may have heard this before - especially those of you who have powered through a music degree or the like! Having said this, there are differences between the qanuns themselves! How? Well, they do not share backstories (as is self-explanatory) and also harbour distinct sound qualities. While it sounds like a pretty unique box of music, it is not - it resembles many of the other forms of zithers used in Arabic countries. Right, on to the piano of the east: the qanun. Although you can utilize a pick if you want to - think guitar, that is pretty much how it’s played! Kanun, and mode of playing it, p. With that in mind, you probably won’t be surprised to know that you play it with your fingers by strumming it. They consist of a flat, wooden body that has many taut strings lengthways across it (almost the same as a dulcimer). Interestingly, the English word “guitar” is derived from “zither”, which is a German phrase. These guys are classified as a string instrument. So, in that case, what is a zither, we hear you ask? The piano of the east: the Qanun, is closely related to a zither that originates in the Middle East and possibly came from the Egyptian harp. Other RPGs do well in this regard, but Original Sin 2 stands out because this well-written story exists in a world that's alive with an impressive degree of freedom and flexibility. Turning over every rock and slip of paper just to find these small wonders is one of the best parts of Original Sin 2. Animals, as mentioned, often give a different perspective on what's going on if you have the "Pet Pal" perk that lets you talk to them. Talking to a random character might lead to tales of sad memories that have no bearing on the plot but are no less stirring and rewarding for that fact. It's beautiful in other ways, too, though, such as how little stories spring from items and NPCs that other games might be content to leave as part of the scenery. Everything on the screen speaks of attention to loving detail and thoughtful placement, whether it's the arrangement of flora on a sandy beach or the animations of a winter dragon thankful for being released from its chains. It doesn't hurt that Original Sin 2 is as graphically beautiful as any game of this perspective has ever been. Sometimes you'll find a ghostly knight who's been magically impaled for centuries by playing hide-and-seek with some kid you clicked on out of curiosity. As with so many things in this world, Original Sin 2 encourages you to experiment and hunt for them in the strangest places as they're unmarked by the garish bluntness of a yellow exclamation point hovering over an NPC's head. This quality extends even to the side quests, which stand out not only for their writing but also for how they're found. It's richly written, too, with everything from the descriptions of the narrator to the most custom responses for specific races or characters being fully voiced. The tale itself achieves a commendable balance of gravitas and lightheartedness that was sometimes missing in the first Divinity: Original Sin. You're encouraged to hunt for sidequests in the strangest places. The sequel takes places centuries later when the settings and characters of the first game have slipped into legend, and it stands fine on the strength of its own tale. If you’re new, you don’t have to worry about missing out on all the lore from the first Original Sin from 2014. Original Sin 2 has important things to say about marginalization and exclusion, focusing as it does on so-called "sourcerers" whom the rest of the world clamps with magic collars that protect others from the abilities that set them apart. This is a proper Great Adventure, packed with high-fantasy hijinks affecting the whole world, but it happily deals less with Tolkienian absolutes and more with the nuanced, morally gray areas that make the universes of Dragon Age and Game of Thrones so appealing. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a masterwork that radiates excellence in every aspect, whether we're talking about its broad commitment to character choice and rewarding combat or the little interactions, like my chat with the rat, that make its fantasy world feel both properly "fantastic" and believable.ĭon't get the impression that it's all about conversations with rodents. But inspired imitation isn't the chief goal here, as in the somewhat similar (and also excellent) Pillars of Eternity from Obsidian. It's one of the finest RPGs of any variety in years, especially if you're a fan of the old isometric Baldur's Gate model that defined the genre in the early '90s. Moments like these are a big part of the reason why I love Larian Studios' new adventure so much. I'd always figured being able to talk to animals would open doors to deep wisdom, but if similar interactions in Divinity: Original Sin 2 prove anything, they're just as foolish as we are. But the punk got it in his little rodent brain that I was lying for my own gain, so he tried to charge past them to the wharf beyond… and got fried by lightning that the husks vomited from their mouths. Just the other day, I met one at the top of a flight of stairs who asked me if the zombie-like creatures crucified below us were any danger to him, and I assured him they most certainly were. After cleaning, always rinse copper thoroughly with water and then dry with a fresh, soft cloth.Only resort to small circular motions when working to remove an especially tough spot. To avoid scratches, apply your homemade cleaning paste with a soft cotton cloth and buff in the direction of the grain, either up and down or left to right.Aim for a paste-like consistency that will stick to the copper surface, rather than a watery one that will run off. For a food-safe, all-natural DIY copper cleaner, mix a mild acid (such as lemon juice or distilled white vinegar) and a gentle abrasive (e.g., salt, flour, baking soda, or cream of tartar).Keep the following general rules in mind when purging dirt, grime, and tarnish from copper: These items should only be cleaned with dish soap and water, as even a mild acid can damage the sealant. Plus, any copper piece with a high-gloss finish that hasn’t changed color over time has likely been treated with a protective lacquer. Fortunately, copper cleans up easily, often with natural ingredients you no doubt already have on hand in your pantry.Ĭare must be taken, however, because copper will scratch with overzealous scrubbing. But even if you like the look of a bit of age, some of what accumulates is just plain dirt. Some folks appreciate the patina copper obtains with time, while others prefer that shiny-as-new appeal. Copper Cleaning: General Rules and Caveats Read on for bright ideas to clean all the copper in your home. Moist conditions can contribute to tarnishing, but considering that copper is commonly used in pipes, sinks, gutters, and pots and pans, there’s little chance of reducing its exposure to water. But as anyone who’s ever seen an old penny knows, copper’s rich orange-gold gleam can easily turn dull and dark, even taking on a chalky greenish cast, when exposed to oxygen and the elements. Copper is an excellent insulator, and it expands and contracts minimally in response to fluctuating temperatures, making it well suited to plumbing and cooking. Though not considered a precious metal, beautiful copper is of enormous value around the house-especially for the way it handles heat. Jake was surprise to see a real dinosaur as he arrived to see what commotion is about. The dino was slipping on the snow and it accidentally broke the ski lift. It was snowy on Jake's Mountain, the snow was very slippery. As the kittens are saved, everyone was wondering where Mayor Humdinger would be.įor Mayor Humdinger, he was still riding on the brachiosaurus, and it exited the tunnel. Rex used his dino claw as a tow line, while Zuma drag it back to solid ground. Rex hopped into Zuma's car, and Zuma drove onto the swamp towards the robot. The robot was sinking lower, the kittens needed to get out. Ryder used his binoculars to get a better look why it's speaking cat, and he discovered the Kitten Catastrophe Crew inside the dinosaur robot. Rex said he doesn't understand it since it's only speaking cat. As everyone was ready, Ryder, Zuma, and Rex hopped into their vehicles and drove off to save the swampy dino.Īs the PAW Patrol made it to the swamp, Ryder asks Rex if he could understand what the dino is saying. He hired Zuma to use his amphibious dino-car to go across the swamp and help get the dino to solid ground, and Rex to help keep the dino calm. Everyone got geared up and ready for action, Ryder told the pups about a dino stuck in the swamp that they have to help it out. Ryder says they're on their way as he summons the pups to the Dino Tower. She told him about a dinosaur stuck and sinking into a swamp. And then, Ryder got a call from Taylor Turbot. The brachiosaurus ran through the waterfall, leaving the Dino Wilds on the loose.īack at the Dino Rescue Center, Ryder, Rocky, and Rex had finished fixing his pup-house. He fell onto the dino's back and it ran off, and even hits the kittens' robot dinosaur right into the swamp and it began to sink into the bottom. And then all of the sudden, a roar came out from a brachiosaurus Mayor Humdinger was sitting on. Second, a pterodactyl, and third, two Tyrannosaurus Rex, but still no luck. First, he started with the stegosaurus, but no luck. Mayor Humdinger began searching a dinosaur to teach them how to roar. Meanwhile, Mayor Humdinger and his kittens made it to the Dino Wilds. Marshall started playing with him by doing a race. They need to keep the baby busy, while the pup-house is being repaired. As Ryder, Rocky, and Rex were about to fix the pup-house, the baby triceratops came back. The Dino Patroller drove to the tunnel, pass the waterfall, pass the meadow, and the PAW Patrol made it to the Dino Rescue Center, where Rex and Taylor were waiting. They told their friends that they need help to fix Rex's pup-house, which was destroyed by a baby triceratops. As the Patroller left, Mayor Humdinger was upset that his kittens wouldn't roar like a dinosaur, he figured they would follow the PAW Patrol to the Dino Wilds, find a dinosaur, and they could teach his kittens how to roar.Īs the PAW Patrol was heading to the Dino Wilds, they got a call from Rex and Taylor. As the "safari" was over, the Dino Patroller has arrived to pick up Marshall to visit Rex and Taylor Turbot in the Dino Wilds. No one was pleased about the robot, so they all left, so much disappointment for Mayor Humdinger. The mayor presents them another fake dinosaur which is a robotic dino driven by the Kitten Catastrophe Crew. He said it has real dinos, but instead it was a dinosaur statue. By the time they made it, Mayor Humdinger invites them to his dinosaur ranch. It started in Foggy Bottom, Marshall, Mayor Goodway, Alex, and Chickaletta were visiting Mayor Humdinger for a big "surprise." They took a long walk to get there, they decided to play a game of "I Spy" along the rest of the way. Mayor Humdinger takes his kitties to the Dino Wilds for some dino acting lessons, but instead finds himself on top of a runaway Brachiosaurus bound for Adventure Bay! Now it's up to the pups to save the town before the Dino stomps all over it! Characters |
