I slapped it across my chest like a pageant queens sash and tossed a stem over to them where it stuck neatly to the front of their sweater. Another memory: on the walk back I was showing **** my favorite plants: rhododendrons, hemlocks, ferns, nettles…then I stooped to pull up a garland of cleavers that was climbing around the rocks. I remember shucking off my boot and lending them one of my wool socks so they could finish the hike and paint in comfort. **** slipped and submerged their foot into the icy stream. A few other memories float to the surface regarding that day On our hike into the ravine we picked our way across the stream leaping from rock to rock and tottering across fallen logs. A few hours later we were soaked to the skin but happy as two clams in a creek. Not long after we met, we went for a hike into Tucquan Glen, one of the most pristine and scenic of seven ravines which opens onto the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, PA. I knew we would be friends at once as we were both born with souls of the poets. **** and I met about 8 years ago when they were doing a residency at the (redacted). I send strength, love and above all solidarity to all who are out on the streets in China and around the world as the people rise up and the powers come down. In doing so they have been unjustly beaten by the police, detained and many have gone missing after being arrested. Over the last few months and this past weekend, especially after many Covid-Zero related tragedies have occurred across China, the people have taken to the streets to voice their dissent of the governments policies which have included three relentless years of mass testing, quarantines and city-wide snap lockdowns. There is a real risk they could be targeted since the Chinese government is matching names and photographs of protestors and those who speak out against the Covid-Zero policy on foreign websites. **** has requested I not use their name for this newsletter since they speak up and share below about their recent experiences protesting the Covid-Zero policy and subsequent crackdowns on ‘white paper protestors’ happening now in China.
